Maria João Melo is a Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration (DCR) of the College of Science and Technology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She leads the Scientific Laboratory at DCR and coordinates the Doctoral Program in Heritage Conservation and Restoration (CORES). Her research bridges the exact sciences, humanities, and art, focusing on interdisciplinary studies of medieval illuminations and cultural heritage.
Her work explores the chemistry of historical pigments and dyes, with recent projects involving the analysis of Galician-Portuguese troubadour poetry manuscripts and collaborations in the history of science and technology. She has contributed to funded projects like Polyphenols in Art and STEMMA, emphasizing material production and conservation techniques.
Melo’s publications highlight advancements in analytical methods for art conservation, including microspectrofluorimetry and pigment photochemistry. She is affiliated with the Requimte Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM).
As head of the Scientific Laboratory, she oversees interdisciplinary research initiatives and doctoral training in conservation science.
