Professor Andrew Beeby holds a dual role as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Durham University and Departmental Representative for Chemistry in the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. His research spans photochemistry, photophysics, and the application of advanced analytical techniques to medieval manuscript analysis. Key focuses include designing photoresponsive materials for organic electronics and studying pigment composition in historical manuscripts using Raman spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, and diffuse reflectance techniques. Recent projects include collaborations on sunscreen photostability, iridium-based luminescent materials, and investigating 19th-century pigment durability through John Ruskin’s collections. He supervises four research postgraduates and maintains a lab equipped with advanced spectroscopic tools including fluorescence lifetime imaging and laser flash photolysis systems. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with cultural heritage science, exemplified by studies of medieval pigments in the Durham Cathedral’s manuscripts and the analysis of illuminated manuscripts like the Coëtivy Hours. Publications reflect his dual focus on material science and art conservation, with contributions to journals across both domains.
