Sarah J. Sobeck is a Professor of Chemistry and Dean for Faculty Development at The College of Wooster. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Marquette University (2000) and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota (2005). Her research specializes in the photochemistry of organic UV absorbers and dyes, focusing on pigment degradation in art conservation and food chemistry contexts. She has advised multiple independent studies at Wooster, including work on carmine colorants and fluorescent paint preservation. Sobeck has received significant grants including NSF-MRI funding for NMR equipment and NetVUE career development grants. She is actively involved in professional organizations like the Inter-American Photochemical Society and has presented at international conferences on art pigment stability and experiential education.
Her teaching portfolio includes introductory and advanced physical chemistry courses (CHEM 111-112, 318-319), along with experiential learning laboratories (CHEM 430). Professional roles include serving as Chair and Secretary of the Wooster ACS Local Section, and participation in STEM outreach initiatives like B-WISER and Expanding Your Horizons workshops for young women.
