Maria Göransdotter is an Associate Professor in Design History and Design Theory at the Umeå Institute of Design (UID), part of Umeå University in Sweden. She currently serves as Director of PhD studies in Industrial Design. Holding a PhD in Industrial Design, her research focuses on transitional design histories, exploring how historical awareness can inform contemporary design practices. She is a core member of the artistic research initiative Design after Progress: Reimagining design histories and futures (2023-2029) funded by the Swedish Research Council, and a 2025-26 RJ-Fellow in the Material Ecologies of Design project at Norway’s Centre for Advanced Study.
Her academic career includes leadership roles such as Head of Department (2013-2015), Vice Rector (2015-2018), and Deputy Head of Department (2009-2012). Teaching emphasizes critical approaches to design theory and history across UID’s studio-based programs. Awards include recognition as a 'recognized university teacher' (2015) for her contributions to pedagogical innovation in design education.
Research interests bridge historical and practice-oriented methods, addressing how design histories can destabilize entrenched assumptions in design processes. Key projects include mapping design methods’ evolution and investigating the feminist origins of Scandinavian user-centered design. She frequently collaborates internationally, notably with Politecnico di Milano and institutions in Italy and Norway.
Publications span design historiography, participatory design, and material ecologies, with recent works appearing in journals like Design Issues and conference proceedings such as the Participatory Design Conference (PDC). Her work interrogates Nordic design’s democratic traditions and seeks to reframe design’s role in addressing complex societal challenges.
