معرفی
Maria Fredriksson is a Senior Lecturer at the Division of Building Materials within Lund University's Faculty of Engineering and a member of the LTH Profile Area: Circular Building Sector. Her research directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable cities and responsible consumption through innovations in building material science.
Her core expertise focuses on moisture dynamics and durability mechanisms in wood and organic building materials. She investigates fundamental wood-water interactions to develop fungal degradation resistance strategies and pioneers advanced methodologies for characterizing high-moisture conditions in wood. This work bridges material chemistry, structural engineering, and sustainable construction practices, with particular emphasis on how moisture management affects long-term building performance.
Analysis of her 2024-2025 publications reveals concentrated research on chemical wood modification techniques (acetylation and thermal treatment) and their impact on moisture sorption behavior. She also addresses systemic challenges in cross-laminated timber systems, examining integrated moisture, fire, acoustic, and energy performance metrics to advance circular building practices.

Fredriksson actively supervises graduate research (2 supervised works documented) and leads significant grant-funded initiatives. Her current portfolio includes 9 projects (4 active), notably the Swedish Energy Agency-funded "Novel bio-based, hygroscopic insulation materials" (2025-2027) and the Åforsk-supported "Fire protection of wood with bio-based wood modification" (2023-2026). These projects address critical gaps in sustainable material development through industry-academic partnerships.
Her international research network demonstrates extensive cross-border collaboration, with active partnerships across Europe focused on circular building sector innovation. Current projects involve interdisciplinary teams investigating fungal degradation thresholds, thermal modification parameters, and bio-based fire retardants for next-generation wood products.
