Maria DE LUCA is Associate Professor of Musicology and History of Music (SSD L-ART/07) at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania, where she teaches History of Music in the Bachelor’s program in Literature and History and Historiography of Music in the Master’s program in Communication of Culture and Entertainment. She is also President of the Master’s program in Communication of Culture and Entertainment (LM65) and Vice-Coordinator of the PhD program in Heritage and Cultural Production Sciences. Her institutional roles include Rector’s Delegate for Relations with the Territory and Cultural Realities (2019–2025) and Director of the Bellini Foundation (2015–2019, 2020–2024).
Her research interests span the social history of music, historiography, Vincenzo Bellini, historical soundscapes, and the didactic use of music history. She has coordinated several University-funded research projects and is the scientific director of the Virtual Museum of Music – BellinInRete, funded by the Italian government and ERDF. She also leads the local unit of a national PRIN project on the formation of musical audiences in Italy from the 20th century to today.
Maria DE LUCA is actively involved in international scholarly communities, including the International Musicological Society (IMS) Study Group on Transmission of Musical Knowledge and the IMS_ICTM Study Group on Mediterranean Music Studies. She has served on the teaching staff of multiple PhD programs at the University of Catania since 2006 and has supervised doctoral theses on topics ranging from 18th-century Sicilian music to Mediterranean oral traditions.
She holds editorial responsibilities as co-editor of the Bollettino di studi belliniani and as a member of the scientific committee of Musica Docta. She is also engaged in public dissemination through concert series, opera program notes for the Teatro Massimo Bellini, and academic outreach to schools and cultural institutions in Catania.
