Maria Christina Herrera is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Sections of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. She is also a faculty scholar at PolicyLab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and holds a National Institute on Drug Abuse K12 grant. Her research focuses on the intersection of HIV and substance use epidemics among adolescents and young adults, particularly improving access to HIV prevention for marginalized and disenfranchised youth.
Dr. Herrera’s clinical and research experience spans diverse settings, including domestic roles in Philadelphia, New York City, San Francisco, and the White Mountain Apache Reservation (Arizona via the Indian Health Service), as well as global work in the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Mexico.
Education: BA from Columbia University (2010), MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (2016), residency in Pediatrics (PLUS Program) at UCSF (completed), Adolescent Medicine Fellowship at CHOP, and MSHP (Master of Science in Health Policy) from the University of Pennsylvania (2022).
She is affiliated with the Janeway Society and contributes to Yale Medicine. Her work emphasizes health equity, global health, and translational research addressing systemic barriers in healthcare access.
