Maria Chikana is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computational and Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Her research focuses on leveraging machine learning and genomic datasets to address complex biological questions, including multi-omics analysis and molecular evolution. She is affiliated with the Carnegie Mellon-University of Pittsburgh PhD Program in Computational Biology.
Her lab develops computational methods like PLIER to analyze gene-environment interactions and genotype effects in the brain. Key publications include work on causal network perturbations in single-cell analysis (Bioinformatics) and context-specific genotypic effects (Nature Methods), with high-profile recognition in Science and media outlets like the New York Times and National Geographic.
