Maria Chekhova

Maria Chekhova serves as Professor of Optics at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) since 2020 and leads an independent research group at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) since 2010. Her work focuses on cutting-edge quantum light research, recently recognized with a prestigious €2.5 million ERC Advanced Grant in June 2025 for a five-year project investigating complex quantum light generation and applications.

Her research centers on quantum optical phenomena including spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), where photon splitting enables photonic quantum technologies through inversion symmetry breaking. She actively explores quantum encryption applications for information security and contributes to the LMQ research initiative at FAU, as highlighted in a January 2025 spotlight interview.
