Maria Carmen Lemos is a Professor of Sustainability and Development at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS). Her work focuses on climate adaptation, co-production of actionable knowledge, and intersections between development and climate resilience. She has contributed to major international assessments including the IPCC AR5 and Fourth US National Climate Assessment.
Education: PhD, MS (Political Science), MIT; BS (Economics), Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Brazil. Awards include election to the National Academy of Sciences (2023).
Research spans climate adaptation strategies, equity in decision-making, and climate information systems. Notable projects include NOAA-funded climate adaptation initiatives in the Great Lakes and USDA's U2U climate services for agriculture. She leads the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA) center.
Affiliations include advisory roles at NCAR, Graham Institute, and multiple National Academies committees. Her work bridges science and policy through boundary organizations and participatory frameworks to enhance societal resilience to climate risks.
