Dmitry Beletsky is a Research Scientist at the University of Michigan’s Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR), a joint institute with NOAA. His work focuses on hydrodynamic modeling of lakes and the coupling of lake physics with biological processes. He has extensive experience with large lakes across Europe (Ladoga, Onega), North America (Great Lakes, Lake Champlain), and the Baltic Sea.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Physical Limnology / Oceanography, Institute of Limnology, Russian Academy of Sciences (1992)
- M.S., Marine Engineering, Russian State Hydrometeorological University (1982)
His research spans climatology and long-term changes in Great Lakes circulation patterns, hydrodynamic modeling, and physical-biological coupling in aquatic systems. He has contributed to studies on hypoxia, invasive species transport, plastic pollution, and climate impacts on lake dynamics.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in Lake Erie hypoxia, invasive species dispersal, and winter climate effects on Lake Michigan. His work integrates field data with numerical models to address environmental challenges.
- Scientific Awards:
- Council of Fellows, CILER (2011–2016)
Dr. Beletsky collaborates with institutions like NOAA, University of Michigan, and international partners, contributing to flood forecasting systems and invasive species management strategies. He utilizes advanced modeling techniques for sediment resuspension, algal blooms, and eDNA detection in aquatic ecosystems.
