معرفی
Maria Alexandra Marques Moreira is an active Principal Investigator at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto. She teaches Molecular Genetics for Veterinary Medicine and RNA Biology for Molecular Biology Complements. Moreira serves on the Scientific Council of the Molecular and Cellular Biology Doctoral Program and leads the Gene Regulation research group at IBMC/i3S since 2013.
- PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Oxford, UK
- Degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon
Her research focuses on mRNA biology and gene expression regulation, particularly alternative pre-mRNA splicing and 3'UTR dynamics in health and disease. The group employs molecular and cellular biology methodologies to study physiologically relevant splicing events.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals expertise in alternative polyadenylation, 3'UTR sequence regulation, gene expression in immune cells, and RNA biology in developmental and disease contexts. The work spans molecular mechanisms from Drosophila to human models, including applications in rheumatoid arthritis and colorectal cancer.
Moreira has supervised multiple undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students, and over 40 international/national doctoral theses as an external reviewer. Her laboratory at IBMC/i3S actively engages students in experimental work.
She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals (1,900+ citations), holds patents in molecular biology, and contributes to book chapters. Her roles include coordinating continuing education courses on Advanced Light Microscopy and Global Climate Change impacts on immunity.
