Maria A. Fahie is a Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences, where she has been a founding faculty member since 2002. She holds dual certifications as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (1998) and a Veterinary License in California since 1996. Her academic roles include leading the 4th-year small animal core surgery course and instructing the 3rd-year surgery/anesthesia course.
Dr. Fahie's educational background includes a DVM from Atlantic Veterinary College (1992), an MS in Small Animal Reconstructive Surgery from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1996), and certifications in Veterinary Surgery Residency and Internship. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes transferring knowledge and experience through clear, non-intimidating instruction.
Her research focuses on clinical veterinary surgery and surgical education, including studies on platelet therapy for canine osteoarthritis, surgical training models, and biomechanical analyses. Her work has been published in journals like JAVMA, JVME, and Veterinary Surgery.
Dr. Fahie has received the Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award (2011) and served in organizations such as the ACVS and AVMA. She is also involved in community roles like Secretary of El Modena High School PTSA and Treasurer of the El Modena Girls Volleyball Boosters.
