Mari Pihlatie is a Professor at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Department of Agricultural Sciences. Her research focuses on soil-vegetation-atmosphere interactions, greenhouse gas fluxes (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O), and agricultural climate impacts. She leads the SMEAR-Agri research station and coordinates international projects, supervising postdocs and PhD students.
Research interests include: greenhouse gas dynamics in agricultural and forest ecosystems, nitrogen cycling, and mitigation strategies. She explores how environmental factors like drought and waterlogging affect emissions, with a focus on boreal and temperate systems.
Key achievements include the 2018 Academy of Finland Award for Social Impact and 2020 Faculty Research Prize. Her work integrates field measurements, controlled experiments, and modeling to address climate change challenges. She contributes to global research networks like the Global Research Alliance and leads the Viikin research infrastructure.
Advising & Grants: Supervises doctoral programs in Plant Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, and Environmental Sciences. Leads projects such as N2O Predic (2024–2028) and MULTA (2022–2025). Collaborates on boreal forest and wetland GHG studies.
Labs/Teams: Coordinates the SMEAR-Agri station and participates in InterEarth RESET (2023–2028), a university profiling initiative.
