Professor Mari Niva is affiliated with the Department of Economics and Management at the University of Helsinki and is a key member of the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Consumer Studies Research Group. She supervises doctoral programs in Food Chain and Health, School/Education/Society/Culture, and Political/Societal/Regional Change.
Her research focuses on sustainable food consumption, particularly plant-based alternatives, dairy reduction, and food systems transformation. She explores consumer motivations, capabilities, and opportunities to shift toward ecological sustainability, with a strong emphasis on Finnish food culture.
Recent projects include SOREBA (plant-based food barriers), SmartDairy (climate-smart dairy solutions), and SUFOCON (normativities in sustainable food transition). Her work intersects policy design, behavioral economics, and interdisciplinary food systems analysis.
She actively engages in public discourse through media appearances, advising on food sustainability, and organizing conferences like the Climate Smart Dairy stakeholders' meeting. Her teaching includes courses in the Department of Economics and Management, and she leads research teams in sustainability science.
