Mari Heinonen is a Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki, leading the Production Animal Medicine department. She also serves in the Helsinki One Health (HOH) Research Centre and the Teachers' Academy. Her research focuses on veterinary science, particularly in production animal medicine, infectious diseases, and animal welfare.
Research Interests
Mari Heinonen's work addresses critical issues in livestock health, including bacterial and viral infections in pigs, antimicrobial resistance, and welfare practices. Notable projects include studies on tail biting behavior in pigs, sow health during parturition, and data integration models for livestock management.
Key Achievements
- 2025: Published groundbreaking work on porcine norovirus detection and pig survival analysis.
- 2023: Awarded grants for biomarker research and antimicrobial treatment protocols.
