Stefan Björkman

Stefan Björkman is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Production Animal Medicine. His research focuses on animal reproduction, environmental toxicology, and livestock health, particularly in sows, stallions, and wild avian species. He investigates the impacts of heavy metals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproductive and physiological systems, as well as welfare and management practices in livestock.

Key research interests include transvaginal ovum pick-up (OPU) techniques in sows, nest-building behavior and farrowing dynamics, and the effects of environmental contaminants on wildlife and domestic animals. He is affiliated with the Helsinki One Health Research group and contributes to interdisciplinary projects addressing One Health challenges.

Björkman has organized international conferences on pig reproduction and herd health, serves on editorial boards for journals like Animals and Reproduction in Domestic Animals, and participates in national/international committees such as ESDAR and the European College of Animal Reproduction. His work bridges clinical veterinary practice, environmental science, and reproductive physiology.
