Margot Canaday is the Dodge Professor of History at Princeton University, specializing in the intersection of gender, sexuality, and state formation in 20th-century America. Her research explores how federal policies and labor markets have shaped queer lives, with key works including The Straight State (2009) and Queer Career (2023). She holds a B.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Her teaching focuses on gender/women’s history, labor studies, and American legal/political history. Current courses include undergraduate lectures on gender/sexuality and seminars on state history and inequality. Canaday’s work bridges legal frameworks and economic systems, showing how state policies created vulnerabilities later exploited by capital.
Recent articles engage with historiographical debates around Queer Career, while earlier works analyze legal definitions of heterosexuality and post-war social policies. Awards include fellowships from the NEH, ACLS, and election to the Society of American Historians. She co-edits the Politics and Culture in Modern America series at Penn Press and collaborates on projects like Intimate States (2021).
