Jarett Henderson is a Continuing Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds a Ph.D. from York University (Toronto, Canada, 2010) and specializes in queer history, British North America/Canadian history, and comparative settler colonialism. His research examines intersections between sexuality, colonial governance, and empire, particularly in 19th-century contexts.
Before joining UCSB, Henderson was an Associate Professor at Mount Royal University (Calgary, Alberta), where he directed the Honours program and organized academic conferences. His current book project, Unnatural Sex and Uncivil Subjects: A Queer History of Straight Settler State Making in Early Canada, explores the criminalization of same-sex acts alongside the establishment of white settler governance in Canada.

His research interests include colonial legal frameworks, queer historical methodologies, and the gendered dimensions of empire-building. He has published widely on topics such as sexual scandals in colonial Canada, the sexual politics of governance, and the representation of queer history in public memory.
Henderson coordinates UCSB’s Gender and Sexualities Research Cluster and serves as English Language Book Review Editor for Histoire sociale/Social History. He has received awards such as the Chancellor’s Faculty Award for Undergraduate Research Mentoring (2023) and has supervised numerous honors theses on queer and gender history.
