Margena A. Christian is a Senior Lecturer and Internship Director for Undergraduate Studies in the English and Professional Writing Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She specializes in media’s role in education, Black popular culture, and historical inquiry. Christian holds an Ed.D. from National Louis University and has over two decades of experience in academia and media.
Her notable roles include founding faculty member of UIC's Professional Writing minor, developer of groundbreaking courses like ENGL 383: Writing for Digital and New Media, and former Assistant Director of the First-Year Writing Program. She teaches in UIC’s Honors College, focusing on African American media narratives and cultural analysis.
Christian’s awards include the 2019-2020 UIC Teaching Recognition Program Award and the 2017 Lecturers' Distinguished Teaching Award. Her research extends to her role as a former Senior Editor at EBONY magazine, where she contributed to historical documentation of Black cultural figures.
Her publications include the acclaimed book Empire: The House That John H. Johnson Built (2018) and forthcoming works on Motown’s Sylvia Moy. She also runs DocM.A.C. Write Consulting, offering editing and writing services.
