Margaret McColl is a Senior Lecturer in Museum and Heritage Education at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the School of Education in the College of Social Sciences. She leads the MSc Museum Education program and co-developed the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's in Education, Museums and Heritage (EDUMaH). Her work emphasizes museum-based learning, creativity, and partnerships in teacher education. She has published widely on educational innovations in museums and has organized international conferences and collaborations with institutions like Glasgow Museums and the Hunterian Museum.
Her research interests include art education, the role of museums as learning spaces, creativity transferability, and clinical models of teacher education. She has pioneered the Partnership Model of Teacher Education and organized study abroad programs in Georgia, USA. Currently supervising 6 MSc and 2 PhD students, her mentorship focuses on topics such as inclusive pedagogy and museum diversity.
McColl chairs key committees including the MEduc/BEd Committee and Master of Education Writing Group, contributing to Scottish education policy. Her recent work explores post-pandemic museum education, digital collaboration, and social memory through visual culture. She has authored/co-authored 12 publications since 2013, including edited books and peer-reviewed articles on museum pedagogy and teacher training.
