Margaret Gatz, PhD is a Professor of Psychology and Gerontology at the University of Southern California, where she serves as a Senior Scientist at the USC Center for Economic and Social Research. She directs the Section on Clinical Research in Aging and Psychology (SCRAP Lab) within the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, focusing on mental health issues in older adults across multiple research initiatives.
Dr. Gatz's primary research interests center on the mental health of older adults, with particular emphasis on risk and protective factors for Alzheimer's disease, age-related changes in depressive symptoms, and evaluating interventions for mental health conditions in aging populations. Her work integrates genetic and environmental perspectives, often utilizing twin studies to disentangle these complex interactions. She has made significant contributions to understanding the relationship between depression and dementia, cognitive aging, and developing culturally appropriate interventions for diverse elderly populations.
Analysis of Dr. Gatz's recent publications reveals consistent focus on cognitive aging, dementia risk factors, and mental health in later life. Her research increasingly incorporates genetic and twin study methodologies to examine how biological and environmental factors interact across the lifespan to influence cognitive outcomes. Notably, her work spans multiple international collaborations, particularly with Swedish researchers, and addresses both clinical and population-level aspects of aging and mental health.
Dr. Gatz has secured substantial research funding for her projects, including the Study of Dementia in Swedish Twins (funded by NIA Grant No. R01-AG08724) and leadership in the Consortium on Interplay of Genes and Environment across Multiple Studies (IGEMS). She has mentored numerous researchers who have gone on to establish their own careers in gerontology and aging research, contributing significantly to building capacity in this critical field.
As director of the SCRAP Lab, Dr. Gatz oversees a comprehensive research program examining multiple aspects of aging and mental health. The lab conducts studies on age-related changes in depressive symptoms, personality, and cognition; risk factors for Alzheimer's disease; family management of aging and dementia; and evaluation of mental health interventions. Her team collaborates with researchers across multiple institutions and countries to advance understanding of healthy cognitive aging.
