Prof. Dr. Marek Nekula is a Professor of Czech and West Slavic Studies at the University of Regensburg and Chair of the Bohemicum – Center for Czech Studies since 1998. He also led the Bohemicum in Passau from 1998 to 2018. His academic leadership includes roles such as Dean of the Faculty of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies (2021–2023) and Principal Investigator in major research networks like the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies.
- Education: Studied Czech and German Philology at Masaryk University Brno and Friedrich Schiller University Jena (1983–1988); PhD at Free University Berlin (1994); DAAD and Austrian Fellowship stays in Berlin, Vienna, and Frankfurt/Oder.
Research Interests center on language contact and multilingualism in Central Europe, including sociolinguistics, language management in families and organizations, and nationalism. He explores memory studies through public space narratives in Prague, Czech literature, and transnational identity formation.
Scientific Awards include:
- 2024 Danubius Award for Central European research.
- 2021 Doctor honoris causa from Charles University.
- 2019 Masaryk University Bronze Medal.
- 2018 Dictionary of the Year for co-editing the New Encyclopedic Dictionary of Czech.
Advising encompasses doctoral and master’s theses on topics like Shoah narratives in Czech literature, language management in bilingual families, and transnational cultural studies. He has supervised over 40 theses and served as a reviewer for habilitation processes at institutions like Harvard and Charles University.
Projects include:
- Language across generations (DFG, 2018–2022).
- Grenze/n in national and transnational memory cultures (Bayerisch-Tschechische Hochschulagentur, 2017–2020).
- Regionalkompetenzen für die bayerisch-tschechische Grenzregion (INTERREG V, 2016–2019).
