Professor Bek specializes in music sociology, history of modern music (particularly 19th-20th centuries), and music analysis. His research explores Czech musical identity, reception history of Czech composers like Janáček and Martinů, and the socio-cultural dimensions of musical life in Central Europe. He has made significant contributions to understanding the relationship between music and society, examining how musical tastes form and evolve within specific cultural contexts.
His extensive publication record reveals consistent scholarly engagement with Czech musical history and sociology. The articles demonstrate a progression from early work on specific composers and musical works toward broader sociological analyses of musical culture. A recurring theme is the exploration of Czech musical identity within Central European contexts, examining German-Czech musical relations and the international reception of Czech composers. His more recent work shows increasing focus on audience studies and the sociological dimensions of musical reception.
