Mareike Kleine

Mareike Kleine is an Associate Professor of EU and International Politics at the European Institute, London School of Economics, and will soon hold the Jean Monnet Professor title. She is also a 2024–2025 visiting fellow at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. Her work bridges European integration, global governance, and international political economy, with a focus on the interplay between domestic politics and international institutions.

Her research explores how informal norms and formal rules interact in international organizations, particularly the EU. Key themes include transparency in negotiations, legitimacy of governance structures, and crisis response mechanisms. Recent publications analyze EU vaccine procurement during pandemics, the impact of national elections on multilateral cooperation, and the tension between confidentiality and democratic accountability in intergovernmental bargaining.

Selected scientific awards include the Theseus Award for Promising Research on European Integration and the Ernst B. Haas Best Dissertation Award from the American Political Science Association. She has contributed to leading journals such as British Journal of Political Science, International Theory, and Review of International Organizations, as well as edited volumes on EU decision-making.

She serves as Chair of the European Politics and Society section of the American Political Science Association and maintains active engagement with public discourse through blogs and policy briefs. Her work has been supported by affiliations with institutions like the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin and Hertie School.
