Dr. Marcus Sibley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology at Saint Mary's University (SMU), part of the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on critical policing, surveillance, and the governance of marginalized groups in Canada, including sex workers, people experiencing homelessness, and victims of sexual violence. He explores legal frameworks around human trafficking, anti-trafficking narratives, and carceral systems through interdisciplinary and socio-legal lenses.
Dr. Sibley leads SSHRC-funded projects on community surveillance networks, homelessness governance, and anti-trafficking policing strategies. His collaborative work includes examining NIMBYism's impact on social inclusion and analyzing correctional officers' perspectives on prison design. He has contributed to debates on decriminalization, campus rape culture, and the intersection of law and marginalized identities.
His research emphasizes critical theory applications to understand systemic inequities, including the criminalization of vulnerable populations and the legal construction of victimhood. He has authored/co-authored over 15 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters since 2017, addressing topics such as carceral epistemics, domestic violence dynamics, and the governance of urban homelessness.
Current research initiatives involve multijurisdictional anti-trafficking policing strategies and resilience-building approaches to counter asocial societal trends. His work bridges academic inquiry with policy advocacy, aiming to influence criminal justice reforms and community resilience frameworks.
