Marcus S Arvan is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at The University of Tampa.
His educational background:
- B.A. from Tufts University (1998)
- Ph.D. from the University of Arizona (2008)
Arvan's research focuses on moral and political theory, philosophy of mind, and artificial intelligence. He has authored three books: Rightness as Fairness: A Moral and Political Theory (2016), Neurofunctional Prudence and Morality: A Philosophical Theory (2020), and Why It’s OK to be a Moderate (2025). His work extends to consciousness, AI safety, free will, justice, and human rights.
His scientific awards include:
- 2017 CAL Excellence in Teaching Award
Arvan actively contributes to the academic community by coaching Ethics Bowl and Bioethics Bowl teams, serving as education director for the UN Association of Tampa Bay, and organizing events on human rights and justice. He also manages the popular The Philosophers’ Cocoon weblog and the New Work in Philosophy Substack newsletter.
