Marcus Carlsson is a Professor of Clinical Physiology at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery. He holds a dual role as Senior Consultant at Karolinska University Hospital. Born in 1973, Carlsson earned his medical degree from Lund University in 1998 and a PhD in 2005. His career includes postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco (2007–2008), and leadership roles, including heading a research group at the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2021–2022). His academic rank is Professor, effective October 2022.
- Education: M.D. (Lund University, 1998), PhD (Lund University, 2005)
- Key Roles: Docent (2010), Senior Consultant (until 2020 at Skåne University Hospital, then at Karolinska University Hospital)
Research focuses on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, heart failure mechanisms, and non-invasive cardiac diagnostics. His work bridges clinical physiology and advanced imaging techniques to improve understanding of cardiovascular diseases, particularly myocardial perfusion, microvascular disease, and interventional outcomes. He leads a research group with a strong emphasis on translational studies.
Grants include funding from the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation for projects like MRI framework development and computational modeling in congenital heart disease. He advises PhD students like Daniel Andersson and Pia Callmer, contributing to training the next generation of cardiovascular researchers.
Labs/Teams: Head of the Clinical Physiology research group at Karolinska, collaborating on projects involving CMR, hemodynamic modeling, and translational cardiovascular imaging.
