Ewa Ehrenborg is a Professor of Molecular Cardiovascular Medicine at the Department of Medicine, Solna, Karolinska Institutet, and the Academic Vice President for Higher Education since 2023. Her roles include leadership in academic governance and strategic education initiatives, alongside translational cardiovascular research. She holds dual affiliations with the 'Autophagy and cardiovascular disease – Team Ewa Ehrenborg' and the 'Lipid handling in health and cardiometabolic disease – Research group Carolina Hagberg.'
Education: MD (1988), PhD in Medical Science (1994, Karolinska Institutet), postdoctoral training at the University of British Columbia (1995-1997), and academic promotions including Assistant Professor (1997-1999), Associate Professor (2001), and full Professor (2011). She completed pedagogical training (Teachers of the Future, 2000-2002).
Research focuses on atherosclerosis mechanisms, particularly lipid metabolism, inflammation, and autophagy interactions. Key areas include macrophage lipid handling, autophagy regulation in plaque vulnerability, and translational therapies. Her work is supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.
Teaching leadership includes Departmental Director of Education (2016-2022), Programme Committee member (Medicine, Biomedicine), and roles in interprofessional education. Awards include the Biomedicine Programme's Pedagogical Prize (2005) and Karolinska Institutet's Pedagogical Prize (2017).
She has mentored seven PhD students (six defended) and served on over 45 doctoral committees. Leadership roles extend to committees at the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, and regional healthcare collaborations (e.g., Capio St. Göran's Hospital, Region Stockholm).
