Marco Schaumloeffel is Lecturer of Portuguese at UBC's Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. He researches creole languages (especially Papiamentu), Afro-Brazilian returnee communities in West Africa (Tabom people), and Hunsrückisch German dialects in Brazil.
His publications analyze Portuguese influences in Caribbean creoles, grammatical features of Papiamentu, and orthographic systems for Brazilian German dialects. He authored the first comprehensive study of Ghana's Tabom community descended from Afro-Brazilian returnees.
Additional expertise includes translation studies and technology-enhanced language teaching. He serves as Chief Examiner for Portuguese for the Caribbean Examinations Council.
