Martin Hansen is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Gothenburg. His academic specialization focuses on German dialects, particularly the Pomeranian language spoken in Brazil.
Dr. Hansen's research centers on the Pomeranian language spoken in Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, three Brazilian states where descendants of Pomeranian emigrants (who arrived mainly between 1859 and 1880) continue to use this Low German dialect despite its disappearance from its European homeland. His work examines language contact between Pomeranian and Portuguese, as well as the influence of standard German and the German dialect Hunsrückisch. His research investigates how language variation depends on socio-biographical factors including regional, generational, and social aspects of speakers.
His publication record demonstrates expertise in both historical and sociolinguistic approaches to German dialectology. His recent work includes corpus-based studies of language variation in Pomerano, comparative analyses of Low German across centuries, and contributions to language preservation through teaching materials and language atlases. His methodology combines corpus linguistics with fieldwork, having recorded a spoken language corpus during research trips in 2010 and 2015/16.
Dr. Hansen has contributed to significant scholarly works including the 2013 language atlas 'Sprachatlas für Rügen und die vorpommersche Küste' and the 2006 teaching book 'Ein Hör- und Lernbuch für das Plattdeutsche.' His research bridges European and Brazilian linguistic contexts, offering valuable insights into language preservation and change in diaspora communities.
