Marco Radi is an Associate Professor at the University of Parma's Department of Food and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (2004) from the University of Siena, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Georgia focusing on nucleoside-derived antitumor agents. Since 2014, he has led a research group specializing in drug discovery for viral infections (Dengue, Zika, SARS-CoV-2), cancer, cystic fibrosis, and inflammatory diseases.
His research integrates combinatorial chemistry, microwave-assisted synthesis, and computational methods to develop novel molecular scaffolds. Current projects include COST initiatives on signal transduction (CA18133) and cancer nanomedicine (CA17140), and a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-funded collaboration with University College London. He mentors students in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology program and has supervised Erasmus delegations.
Radi's work has yielded 75+ publications, 6 patents, and awards including the 2009 Start Cup Toscana. His lab emphasizes sustainable chemistry, with recent articles exploring antiviral kinase inhibitors, immunomodulators, and green synthesis techniques. Key methodologies include:
- Microwave-assisted multicomponent reactions
- Structure-based drug design
- In silico screening for polypharmacology
He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Chemistry and founded the PANVIRIDE initiative for broad-spectrum antivirals.
