Stefania Butini is a Full Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Siena, actively teaching courses including Medicinal and Toxicological Chemistry II and Laboratory in Drug Extraction and Synthesis. Her office is located at Polo Scientifico S. Miniato with virtual consultations available via her dedicated platform.
Education:
- PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Siena (2000)
- Degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, University of Siena (1997)
- Research Internship, University of Groningen (1999-2000)
Her research program targets drug discovery for central nervous system disorders, antimalarial applications, and antitumor agents through rational drug design, novel synthetic methodologies, and structure-activity relationship studies. She integrates bioinformatics and molecular modeling to develop bioactive compounds addressing neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions while exploring new therapeutic targets.
Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate diverse expertise across antiviral development (Monkeypox/SARS-CoV-2), epigenetic cancer therapeutics, fibrosis intervention via PROTAC technology, and nutraceutical wound healing. This portfolio highlights her translational approach bridging medicinal chemistry with unmet clinical needs in infectious diseases, oncology, and regenerative medicine.
Scientific Awards: No awards documented in source materials.
As Research Units' coordinator for national and international polycentric projects, she leads collaborative drug development initiatives while mentoring graduate researchers. Her grant portfolio emphasizes cross-institutional partnerships focused on therapeutic innovation.
Her laboratory within the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy drives multidisciplinary investigations from target identification through preclinical validation, maintaining strong industry and academic networks for accelerating therapeutic candidate development.
