Antonella Brizzi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Siena, Italy. She holds a position as Professore Associato and is actively involved in teaching pharmaceutical chemistry courses including Quantitative Drug Analysis. Her office and laboratory are located at the Polo Scientifico Universitario di San Miniato in Siena.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (2002) from the University of Siena, a Pharmaceutical and Applied Chemistry Honours Degree (1997), and certification as a Pharmacist (1997). Additional training includes courses on teaching methods, supplements in sports, endocannabinoid system modulation, and worker safety.
Brizzi's research focuses on the endovanilloid and endocannabinoid systems, with particular emphasis on designing molecules that interact with TRP channels (such as TRPV1, TRPA1, TRPV4) and enzymes like FAAH. Her work also extends to fatty acid receptors (GPCR120 and GPCR40) for metabolic disorders. This research aims to develop novel therapeutics for pain, inflammation, and metabolic pathologies through rational drug design and synthesis.
Her recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong trend in medicinal chemistry targeting neuropharmacological pathways and metabolic receptors. Key areas include TRP channel modulators, dual-acting hybrids for neurodegenerative diseases, and natural product derivatives with anti-inflammatory properties. These works often combine in silico design, chemical synthesis, and biological evaluation.
She maintains an active laboratory at the Polo Scientifico Universitario di San Miniato (B_01_129) where she conducts research on cannabinergic and vanilloid modulators, as well as fatty acid receptor ligands.
