Marco Petitta

Marco Petitta is a Full Professor of Hydrogeology at Sapienza University of Rome and serves as Vice President for Science and Programme of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) since 2021, having previously held leadership roles including Vice-President for Western and Central Europe (2016-2021) and Chairman of the Italian Chapter (2012-2016).

His research expertise spans critical groundwater domains:

• Groundwater resource management under anthropogenic pressures
• Surface water-groundwater interactions
• Contaminant remediation techniques
• Isotopic tracing in hydrogeological systems
• Ecohydrological groundwater dependencies
• Seismically induced groundwater fluctuations

Prof. Petitta has supervised 14 PhD students over two decades and leads major international research initiatives including Horizon2020 KINDRA (2015-2018), EU PRIMA KARMA (2019-2022), and Horizon Europe NINFA (2022-2026). He previously coordinated the European Federation of Geologists' Hydrogeology Expert Panel and contributed to EU Water Directive implementation through the European Commission's Groundwater Working Group.

He maintains active global research partnerships across Europe and internationally, focusing on climate change impacts, water-energy-food nexus challenges, and Sustainable Development Goal implementation through groundwater governance.
