Joanna Doummar

Joanna Doummar is an Associate Professor of Groundwater Hydrology and Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences at the American University of Beirut (AUB), concurrently serving as Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa region of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH).

Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from Georg-August University Goettingen, Germany.

Dr. Doummar's research centers on karst aquifer systems, specializing in quantitative vulnerability assessment through numerical simulation of integrated karst systems and multi-method aquifer characterization. She pioneers high-resolution monitoring networks for water resources and climatic parameters in Lebanon's under-studied regions while advancing managed aquifer recharge (MAR) through active pilot testing. Her work integrates contamination indicator analysis for transport behavior assessment in complex hydrogeological settings.

Key recognition includes election to the World Economic Forum Young Scientists Community (Class of 2020).

As principal investigator for international research grants, she has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students in hydrogeology research yielding peer-reviewed publications. Current fieldwork focuses on expanding Lebanon's water resource monitoring infrastructure and validating MAR implementation strategies in regional aquifers.
