Marco Giugni is a Full Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Geneva's Faculty of Social Sciences. He serves as Director of the Institute for Citizenship Studies (InCite) and is the European editor of Mobilization: An International Journal. His academic career spans several decades with significant contributions to the study of political behavior, social movements, and political participation.
Professor Giugni's research interests focus on political behavior, social movements, political participation, citizenship studies, and migration politics. His work examines how social movements influence political processes, the political participation of marginalized groups including youth and migrants, and the impact of economic crises on political behavior. He has conducted extensive research on the political engagement of unemployed youth and the role of civil society organizations in addressing social inequalities. His publications demonstrate methodological rigor and theoretical innovation, often combining quantitative analysis with qualitative insights.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on youth political participation, with particular attention to how inequalities based on gender, social class, and age affect political engagement. His work also explores the relationship between social movements and political institutions, examining how movements influence policy outcomes and democratic processes. Giugni has made significant contributions to understanding the impact of economic crises on political behavior and the role of civil society in responding to these challenges.
Professor Giugni teaches courses on Political mobilization (T207035), Social movements (T407226), Quantitative methods (T407291), and Contemporary Issues of Citizenship (T407012). His teaching reflects his interdisciplinary approach to political science and his commitment to training the next generation of scholars.
He has supervised numerous doctoral students whose research spans topics including youth political participation, migration politics, civil society organizations, and political movements. His current projects include Immigrant Solidarity in Switzerland: Attitudes and Practices of Support to Others (FNS COST), InterSectIonal iNClusion in delibeRation and participatiON with Youth (SINCRONY), and Democratic Governance, Environmental and Climate Challenges, and Societal Transformation: Deliberation, Inclusiveness, and Citizen Empowerment for Sustainable Food Systems (DEMETRA).
