Marcia J. Bunge is Professor of Religion at Gustavus Adolphus College and holds the Bernhardson Distinguished Chair of Lutheran Studies. She is also an Extraordinary Research Professor at North-West University (South Africa) and Professor of Humanities and Theology at Christ College, Valparaiso University (Indiana). Bunge co-founded the Gustavus Academy for Faith, Science, and Ethics and serves as Director of the Child in Religion and Ethics Project.
- Education: B.A. in Music and English from St. Olaf College; M.A. and Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Chicago.
Her research focuses on child advocacy, ethical dimensions of childhood in world religions, inter-religious cooperation, and Lutheran theology, particularly in education and vocation. She has published six foundational books, including The Child in Christian Thought and Child Theology: Diverse Methods and Global Perspectives.

Bunge’s work has received nearly $700,000 in grants and includes leadership roles on national/international child-focused committees, such as steering committees for the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature. She also collaborated on the interdisciplinary European Childhoods project at the University of Oslo.
