Marcia Froehlich

Marcia (Marcy) Froehlich serves as Associate Professor of Costume Design in the Department of Drama within the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine. With an M.F.A. from the University of Michigan, she brings extensive professional experience to her academic role, having previously taught at UCLA, SUNY New Paltz, and Santa Barbara City College.

Her research and professional interests focus on costume design across multiple performance mediums, with particular expertise in period costume design for theatre, film, and television. Froehlich approaches costume design as storytelling through clothing, creating believable worlds for actors and audiences while defining character through visual narrative.

Froehlich's design portfolio spans over two decades of work across theatre, film, and television. Her theatre work includes numerous productions at the Rubicon Theatre where she earned seven Ovation nominations, with her most recent nomination resulting in an award for Best Play (Large Theater) for Gulf View Drive in 2017. She has designed costumes for musicals at the Sacramento Music Circus for 12 seasons and has worked on opera productions including Orpheus and Euridice staged in an Olympic swimming pool.

Professor Froehlich has contributed significantly to both academic and professional costume design communities. She has served on the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of the Costume Designers Guild and has been a contributing author to their magazine for eight years. Her professional work extends to major film productions including American Beauty and The Master, as well as the Miss America Pageant which she has worked on annually since 2002. She has also exhibited her artwork at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.
