Marcello Ienca is the inaugural Professor of Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Neuroscience and the Deputy Director of the Center for Ethics and History of Medicine at the Medical School of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He also serves as the Head of the Intelligent Systems Group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
Dr. Ienca's research spans a broad interdisciplinary terrain but focuses primarily on the science and ethics of intelligent systems of both biological and artificial nature. His work bridges neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and ethics, addressing critical questions about how these technologies impact human cognition, autonomy, and society. He has developed influential frameworks for responsible innovation in brain-computer interfaces and contributes significantly to the discourse on AI governance in medical contexts.
His scholarly work has been published in top-tier journals including Nature Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, and Nature Machine Intelligence, with coverage in major media outlets such as The New Yorker, The Times, The Guardian, and BBC. Dr. Ienca actively shapes science and technology policy as a commissioned expert for organizations including the OECD, Council of Europe, UN, and EU Parliament.
Dr. Ienca holds leadership positions as a board member of the International Neuroethics Society and serves as the Neuroethics Lead of the International Brain Initiative, demonstrating his significant influence in establishing ethical guidelines for emerging neurotechnologies and AI applications in healthcare worldwide.
