Marcel van der Linden is a Senior Researcher at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) affiliated with the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. He previously served as Research Director at IISH and held a Concurrent Professorship at Nanjing University, China (2009-2012). He has been President of the International Social History Association (2005-2020) and Vice-President of the International Conference of Labour and Social History. His expertise spans global labor history, socialist societies, and Marxist theory.
Research focuses on transnational labor movements, comparative social history, and the globalization of labor studies. He has authored/co-authored over 227 publications, including seminal works on labor internationalism, capitalism, and workers' movements. His awards include the René Kuczynski Prize (2009), Doctor honoris causa from the University of Oslo (2008), and the Bochumer Historikerpreis (2014).
He holds editorial roles across 20+ international journals and series, including International Review of Social History and the Historical Materialism Book Series. He has assessed grants for prestigious institutions like the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Science Foundation. His advisory work spans global labor networks and academic initiatives.
