معرفی
Marcel van Vugt is a Professor of Molecular Oncology and Board member at the Comprehensive Cancer Center UMCG, part of the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how normal and cancer cells respond to DNA damage, aiming to improve cancer therapies.
Education & Career: Earned his PhD in Cell Cycle Regulation at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (2005). Conducted postdoctoral research at MIT (2005-2009). Since 2009, leads an independent research group at UMCG. Appointed Full Professor in 2018 and directed the Cancer Research Center Groningen until 2023.
Research Interests: Investigates DNA damage response mechanisms, genomic instability, and their therapeutic implications. Key areas include mitotic DNA repair, inflammatory signaling in cancer, and synthetic lethality targets. Uses multidisciplinary approaches combining cell biology, proteomics, and computational analysis of tumor data.
Awards: NWO VICI (2022), ERC Consolidator Grant (2016), NWO VIDI (2013), EMBO/KWF Fellowships (2010).
Grants & Activities: Supervised 22 PhD students. Active in advisory roles for the Dutch Cancer Society, Repare Therapeutics, and UMCG facilities. Organizes international conferences on DNA repair and molecular oncology.
Labs & Collaborations: Leads the Van Vugt Lab at UMCG, collaborating with global institutions on projects involving DNA damage response in cancer therapy. Embedded in a clinical research environment to translate findings into clinical applications.
