Marcel Garz is an Associate Professor of Economics at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), part of Jönköping University. He is affiliated with the Media, Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC) and serves on JIBS committees such as the Research Faculty Board and Recruitment Committee. His research focuses on news markets, media slant, digital platforms' societal impact, and causal inference methods. Key areas include cross-disciplinary topics like media bias, algorithmic curation, and pandemic behavior analysis.
Garz holds a PhD in Economics and leads interdisciplinary initiatives like the Global Social Media Experiment (team leader in Sweden) and the Data Methods Initiative, which promotes computational methods in social sciences. He has organized workshops such as the Economics of Media Bias Workshop and co-authored studies on topics ranging from media consolidation effects to tax policy impacts on short-term rentals.
His research employs advanced techniques like deep learning, computational linguistics, and computer vision. Notable projects include investigating media coverage's influence on electoral outcomes and analyzing algorithmic content selection's role in user engagement. He collaborates widely, with recent work on pandemic behavior in Sweden and viewpoint diversity in news markets.
