Marc Schneiberg is the John C. Pock Professor of Sociology at Reed College, where he has taught since 2000. He holds a BA from Haverford College (1980) and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1994). His research focuses on organizational diversity, alternatives to shareholder corporations, and the economic consequences of cooperative enterprises in American capitalism. He examines historical and contemporary cases of mutual savings and loans, community banks, credit unions, and agricultural cooperatives to explore how alternative organizational forms can foster economic resilience and decentralized market structures.
His work also addresses regulatory dynamics in manufacturing and finance, including analyses of financial crisis responses and small business lending during the Great Recession and COVID-19 pandemic. He has received National Science Foundation grants for studies on banking ecologies and economic inclusivity. Schneiberg serves as Editor of Socio-Economic Review and Consulting Editor of Sociological Science, and has held leadership roles in the American Sociological Association and the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics.
Teaching interests include economic sociology, institutional analysis, American capitalism, and race and ethnicity. His courses emphasize critical engagement with organizational structures, regulatory frameworks, and the intersection of social movements with economic systems. Schneiberg’s research and editorial contributions highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding institutional change and market dynamics.
