Marc Ruel, MD, MPH, is a Professor in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and holds concurrent appointments in the Department of Surgery and Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. A pioneering cardiac surgeon, he developed multi-vessel minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS CABG) and led international training programs in these techniques.

His research focuses on minimally invasive cardiac surgery, regenerative medicine, and improving patient outcomes. Publications include over 500 scientific papers, seven books (including a 600-page textbook on cardiac surgical techniques), and leadership roles in 17 international cardiovascular guidelines.

Dr. Ruel led the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for 11 years, expanding its global impact through robotic cardiac surgery programs and BEaTS Laboratory (founded by him, now led by Erik Suuronen and Emilio Alarcón). He serves as Associate Editor for Circulation and reviews for major research agencies including CIHR and Swiss National Science Foundation.
