Dr. Marc Potenza is a Professor of Psychiatry, Child Study, and Neuroscience at Yale University School of Medicine. He holds leadership roles as Director of the Center of Excellence in Gambling Research, the Yale Program for Research on Impulsivity and Impulse Control Disorders, and the Women and Addictive Disorders Core at Women's Health Research at Yale. Board-certified in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, Dr. Potenza completed his MD and PhD in Cell Biology at Yale, followed by residency and fellowship training there.
His research focuses on neurobiological mechanisms and treatments for substance and non-substance addictions, including gambling disorder, gaming disorder, compulsive sexual behavior, and binge eating. He applies brain imaging, genetic, and clinical trial methodologies to advance prevention and treatment strategies, emphasizing gender differences and intermediary phenotypes like impulsivity.
Dr. Potenza has published over 385 peer-reviewed articles and serves on editorial boards including as Editor-in-Chief of Current Addiction Reports. He advises national and international organizations such as WHO and NIH on addiction-related policies. Awards include the Phoenix Award and Lifetime Research Award from the National Council on Problem Gambling.
His academic leadership includes directing interdisciplinary teams at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, Stress Center, and Wu Tsai Institute. Current research highlights include transdiagnostic brain studies and cross-cultural validation of addiction screening tools across 42 countries.
