With extensive international experience in management consulting and family enterprises across Latin America, the U.K., India, and China, he brings practical insights to his academic role.
His research interests focus on Family Business Systems, Corporate Strategy, Business Innovation, Crisis Management, and Succession Planning. Bergfeld examines how family businesses can achieve longevity through strategic alignment of portfolio strategies with family capabilities, and investigates resilience in family firms during crises.
His recent publications reveal trends in family business longevity, succession planning approaches that incorporate psychological factors like happiness, and the evolving relationship between private equity funds and family businesses. His work bridges academic research with practical applications for family enterprises navigating complex business environments.
Bergfeld founded the Courage Center of Global Family Business at Munich Business School, which serves as both a think tank and executive education institute. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Center provided critical research and support for family businesses in crisis management and recovery.
As Managing Director of Courage Partners Group, a boutique advisory practice he founded in 2007, Bergfeld continues to work directly with business families on strategy, innovation, and investment matters while maintaining his academic responsibilities.
