معرفی
Marc Greenberg is the Vernon K. Krieble Professor of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. He leads an active research group focused on nucleic acid chemistry, DNA/RNA damage, repair mechanisms, and chemical biology. His work bridges synthetic organic chemistry with molecular and cellular biology.
Education:
- PhD, Yale University, Department of Chemistry
- Postdoctoral Fellow, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), under Professor Peter Dervan
- Undergraduate degrees in Chemistry (New York University) and Chemical Engineering (Cooper Union School of Engineering)
Research Interests: Dr. Greenberg's research centers on understanding the chemical basis of DNA and RNA damage, particularly oxidative lesions such as Fapy•dG and 8-oxo-dG. His lab investigates how these lesions affect transcription, replication, and repair processes. They also study histone-catalyzed chemistry in nucleosomes, design DNA repair inhibitors, and develop radiosensitizing agents for cancer therapy under hypoxic conditions.
Recent Research Trends: His recent publications (2021–2025) reveal a strong focus on lesion bypass by DNA polymerases, transcriptional mutagenesis, DNA-protein crosslinks, tandem lesions, and epigenetic signaling triggered by DNA damage. The work combines synthetic chemistry, biochemical assays, structural analysis, and cellular models.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
- Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, American Chemical Society (2016)
- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow (1996–2000)
Advising and Grants: Dr. Greenberg has advised multiple PhD students, including Shijun Gao and Tingyu Wen, both of whom recently completed their theses. He has secured significant research funding, evidenced by ongoing projects, collaborative publications, and the operation of a well-staffed laboratory. He was the Founding Director of the Chemistry-Biology Interface program at JHU (2005–2013), highlighting his role in interdisciplinary training.
Lab and Team: The Greenberg Group includes postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates, with recent members including Dr. Zehui Zhou (postdoc), and undergraduates Neil Mahto, Beyoncé Hector, and Abby Morita. The group actively publishes in top journals such as JACS, Nucleic Acids Research, and Chemical Research in Toxicology.
