Marc Bierkens is a Professor of Earth Surface Hydrology and Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University. His research focuses on global hydrology, water scarcity, and groundwater depletion, with an emphasis on climate change impacts and human water use. He leads a research group that contributes to global hydrological models, such as PCR-GLOBWB and GLOBGM, which inform public outreach and policy.
- Education: MSc in Hydrology (Wageningen University, 1990); PhD in Physical Geography (Utrecht University, 1994).
- Roles: Dean of Geosciences, Vice-Dean of Research (since 2021), and former Chair of the Department of Physical Geography (2009–2015).
- Professional Affiliations: Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (since 2016), Editor of Water Resources Research, and former Chair of the Boussinesq Center and Netherlands Hydrology Society.
Research Highlights: Investigates global water scarcity, groundwater depletion, and salinization. His work shows 25% of global irrigation water is unsustainable, tripling since 1960. He co-authored over 250 publications and edited books on hydrology and geostatistics.
Awards: 2023 Henry Darcy Medal (EGU), Hydrology Award (AGU), and membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Supervision: Supervised 26 PhD theses and served on 90+ committees. Active in global initiatives like Future Deltas and Pathways to Sustainability.
