Dr. Niko Wanders is an Associate Professor in Physical Geography at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. Specializing in hydrological extremes and climate change, his research focuses on droughts, floods, and their societal impacts. He holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2015) and has held visiting positions at Princeton University. His work bridges science and policy, emphasizing drought forecasting and climate resilience.
- Education: BSc in Soil Water Atmosphere (Wageningen, 2009), MSc in Hydrology & Water Quality (Wageningen, 2011), PhD in Hydrology (Utrecht, 2015)
- Awards: ERC Starting Grant (2022), EGU Arne Richter Award (2022), NWO VIDI (2023)
Research interests include:
- Drought Dynamics: Recovery mechanisms, multi-year drought drivers, and socio-economic impacts.
- Climate Extremes: Flood modeling, seasonal forecasting, and hydrological cycle shifts.
- Global Modeling: Hyper-resolution hydrology, PCR-GLOBWB framework, and Earth observation integration.
Publications highlight advancements in global hydrological modeling, drought recovery, and climate change impacts. His work informs policy through improved water management strategies and seasonal forecasts.
